Covered Slip Preparing for Mississippi Leg in Alton, IL (#54)

Alton is a famous stop on the Loop as one of the last two legs to fill up for fuel before the long stretch of the Mississippi without fuel or amenities. The next stop is the famous "Hoppies" barge where Loopers get fuel.

When we arrived in Alton, we had some of our highest temperatures of our Great Loop adventure in the 90s. Having the covered slip was a delight and treat!

Sign notes that trains are remote controlled int he area. There wasn't really a crossing arm here, but the line ended in the covered shed in front of the Welcome to Alton building.

Alton is the location of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debate where this plaque and statues stand.

We found a wonderful coffee shop called the Post in Alton which is a must visit stop.

Ted and Laura took a brief tour of the arches by land before Laura's quick trip to Texas.

While Laura was gone, Ted cleaned the boat and changed the oil. When Laura returned, we started preparing for our trip down the Mississippi.
