Porch Time in Southport (#114)

We had a short trip to Southport and didn't have to leave at our early first light time for only a 40 mile day.

The weather was calm.

We saw the coast guard pulling the dredging boat. We coordinated a pass with them on the VHF.

We always travel under a bridge in the section that has these barracades. Most new bridges are 65 ft high for commercial traffic and sailboats to have easy passage.

We saw dredging along the way.

This tower was where pilots would stay to wait for ships to come in and they would help the ships navigate the shallow waters.

This house was built after the civil war and has a beautiful view of the water.

The owner of Wicked Good Retro took the time to tell Laura about the history of the historical bottles she sells.

The bottles are found in either the sea (by divers), or old wells or trash areas dating back centuries.

She shared that the medicine bottles were the most valuable.

Our boat could be swallowed up by this fishing boat.

We had a nice spot inside. We timed our arrival for easy docking with the tides.

Laura found a Wine and Beer bar and Ted joined her before they met up at Porch Time. We had wonderful conversation while learning more about the town.

A Looper favorite is the opportunity to go sit on the porch of Robert & Kay Creech, a tradition for over 20 years when you go to Southport. We met up for Porch Time with Tic Tac and Adiago. Robert came to our boat and Kay sent us a note on Nebo to let us know when and where to meet them. There porch looks over the water and the street from the marina into the town.

At porch time, we learned that when the Creeches moved to Southport in the 70', the town was a small fishing town. Today, there is only one shrimp boat remaining from this 5th generation fishing family.

Stay: 1 night

Pros: Porch time, great food choices, cute town, well protected, Easy to dock

Cons: Travel day after can have bad weather in the sounds

Would have liked to have stayed another day or two
